Mel Harkrader Pine calls himself a Jewish Buddhist Contrarian. He is Jewish by ethnicity, Buddhist by spiritual calling, and Contrarian by nature. He is not retired but prefers to say he’s on a permanent spiritual sabbatical. His path has led him to the task of depolarizing America through Better Angels, a citizens movement. He serves as the Better Angels coordinator for Virginia and West Virginia. In his spare time, he teaches meditation and attends silent retreats.
Short description: Our nation is becoming more tribal every day. Are the Reds and the Blues on the brink of a new sort of civil war, or is this just a pendulum swing and we’ll return to civility and friendship? Mel isn’t passively waiting to find out, and he hopes you aren’t either. His vision, and that of the citizens organization Better Angels, is to overcome the tribalism by person-to-person understanding and friendship. Come learn how. In the afternoon, Mel will be co-moderator of a Better Angels Red/Blue Workshop.
