CHRIS VAN CLEAVE
Singer-Songwriter-Actor-Playwright
After more than 45 years within the creative and performing arts, CHRIS VAN CLEAVE is still a
proli$c and eclectic composer. Using an acoustic guitar, his strong melodic voice, and a life-rich
lyrical landscape, his compositions are nearing one thousand. They defy easy categorization to
include folk, rock, country, jazz, R&B, reggae and musical theater.
In addition to his initial major label releases on Paramount Records with Laura Branigan and
Walker Daniels (original lead in Hair), Van Cleave has independently produced eight albums of his
original music, with his latest released in July 2019.
As an actor-singer, Van Cleave has starred in Hair ; in two national tours of Jesus Christ Superstar,
playing the role of Jesus, throughout the States and Canada. He also played leading roles in
Les Miserables and Chess in London West End theaters and has been featured in many other
musicals in the States, such as Man of La Mancha, Sweeney Todd, Pirates of Penzance, Kismet,
Trouble in Tahiti, etc. In $lm and television, Chris has had featured roles in Killing Kennedy, The
Secret Lives of Charles Lindbergh, The Untold Stories of the Navy Seals, Legends & Lies , and Eyes of
the Roshi.
As a singer-songwriter-guitarist, Van Cleave has performed in most of the United States (including
Hawaii), the Virgin Islands, Canada, Great Britain, Norway, and The Netherlands. He has opened
for Kansas, Poco, Eric Burdon, Leon Russell, and Buckwheat Zydeco. As a recording artist and
songwriter, he has collaborated with many, including Suzi Quatro, Jim McCarty(Yardbirds), and
Barry Mason (writer of hits for Tom Jones and Englebert Humperdink).
As a composer and script writer, Van Cleave has written the script and music for two musicals:
Troubadour Knight and Presence, and co-written two others by creating the music for The
Davidson A*air, written by Paul Solomon, and latterly Starboy, in collaboration with the script
writer, Ray Shell.
Chris wrote the song and initiated the concept for a documentary project called Not Forgotten
which focuses on the over 1600 unaccounted-for Americans from the Vietnam War. He was invited
to perform this song in the NYC Veterans Day Parade (5oth Anniversary) and at The Ride Home in
Americas, GA – one of the largest gatherings for former POW,MIA, and families of the
unaccounted-for since WW2.
Chris has an MFA from UVA. Full bio available at his website
